Accessibility statement
PRKatalog is meant to be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or reduced motion. This page sets out where we stand, what we have already fixed, and what is still open.
The public directory is designed to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. This is a self-assessment based on our own manual and automated testing — it has not been verified by an independent auditor, so treat it as a statement of intent backed by testing rather than a certification.
What is built in
These are the things we check on every change, not one-off fixes.
- Full keyboard operation — Every control — the search palette, the directory view switcher, the rating picker, the cookie banner — is reachable and operable with the keyboard alone. A skip link jumps straight to the main content, and the search dialog keeps focus inside it and hands focus back to the button that opened it.
- A focus indicator you can actually see — One high-contrast focus ring is applied site-wide, with a light variant on the dark hero and footer so it never disappears against the background. The sticky header is accounted for, so a focused element is never left hidden underneath it.
- Colour and contrast — Body text, muted text, badges, and status pills are checked against WCAG's 4.5:1 minimum, and form field borders, chart bars, and on/off states against the 3:1 minimum for non-text elements. Nothing relies on colour alone: scores, ratings, and submission results all carry a text equivalent.
- Respect for reduced motion — If your system asks for reduced motion, animations, transitions, and smooth scrolling are switched off across the site.
- Meaningful structure — Pages use real landmarks, one h1 followed by an ordered heading hierarchy, list markup for lists, and breadcrumbs as a labelled navigation landmark. Screenshots and logos carry alt text, and purely decorative marks are hidden from assistive technology.
- Forms that explain themselves — Every field has a real label rather than a placeholder standing in for one. Errors are announced when they appear, and counts that change without a page load — search results, directory filters, bulk submissions — are announced politely instead of changing in silence.
- Resizing and reflow — Layouts are fluid and reflow to a single column on narrow viewports, so the site stays usable zoomed to 200% or on a small screen without horizontal scrolling. Touch targets grow to at least 44 by 44 pixels on small screens.
Known limitations
We would rather list these than pretend they are not there. Each one is on the list to fix.
- Anti-spam challenge — The submission and review forms can show a Cloudflare Turnstile challenge. That widget is rendered by a third party, so its accessibility is outside our control. If it blocks you, email us and we will take your submission by email instead.
- Listed websites themselves — PRKatalog links out to independent websites. We cannot guarantee the accessibility of anything beyond our own pages, and our quality score does not currently measure accessibility.
- Machine-translated content — English is the source language; other language versions are machine-translated and reviewed only in part. Wording in translated pages may read less naturally than the English original.
- No independent audit yet — Our conformance claim rests on internal testing. We have not yet commissioned an external audit or user testing with people who rely on assistive technology.
How we test
Changes are checked by keyboard alone, with browser accessibility inspectors, and against contrast ratios calculated from the actual colour tokens rather than eyeballed. We test at 200% zoom and at a 320-pixel-wide viewport, and with the operating system's reduced-motion setting turned on.
Tell us what is broken
If something on this site is hard or impossible to use, we want to hear about it — a short note about the page and what went wrong is enough. Reports about a specific barrier are the fastest way to get it fixed.
We aim to reply within five working days, and to tell you what we intend to do about it.
